Kim Burton, a native Oregonian, started her musical career as a violinist. At age 15, she
switched to the viola on the recommendation of her music teacher and fell in love with the instrument.
She was a member of the Portland Youth Philharmonic for 12 years and was principal violist for part of that time. Kim attended Portland State University as an undergraduate and studied music performance. Following college she became a freelance violist performing with many Northwest ensembles including Oregon Ballet Orchestra, Portland Opera, Columbia Symphony Orchestra and the Eugene Symphony. She also has been a substitute with the Oregon Symphony. In addition, she is a member of the Emerald String Quartet and the Oregon String Quartet.
In her spare time, Kim volunteers at her daughter's school in the string program. When she is not playing her viola, she enjoys playing golf and spending time with her husband Bill and her two children David and Lauren.
