MEET the BEAT is the educational program of the Portland Columbia Symphony
Orchestra designed to make music appealing and within the reach of all patrons. Our goal is to dispel the notion that serious music
must be made childproof.
MEET the BEAT consists of three central projects: two animal-themed
concerts artistically formatted for the young or first-time concert attendee, an
Audience Outreach Ticket Program that targets segments of the
population underserved by the arts to allow access to all of our concerts, and a
summer chamber music camp program.

Artistic Directors Dawn Carter and Camilla Wilson Scott lead string players
of all ages and levels through a chamber music program. Get all the

CSO collaborates with the Center for the Arts Foundation to present this event that features interactive arts booths and a concert. The focal point is Camille Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals. Children and families are invited to 'safari' through the orchestra as it plays in addition to enjoying theater, crafts, and an instrument petting zoo. Students from area schools may submit artwork that will be on display at the event.

The second Meet the Beat project is two performances of our Holiday Gift of Music concert featuring excerpts from The Nutcracker, Die Fledermaus, and a holiday sing-a-long. The centerpiece of the concerts is the performance of Sergei Prokofiev’s musical fable, Peter and The Wolf complete with puppets created by Tears of Joy.
