Michael Charles Smith is a marimba soloist, classical percussionist, composer, singer-songwriter, and teacher currently
residing in Portland, Oregon. As a classical percussionist he performs with Portland Columbia Symphony, Vancouver Symphony,
and Portland Chamber Orchestra. In addition to performing with Porltland Columbia Symphony, he is serving on the search
committee for the new conductor and music director.
As a marimba soloist, Michael performs at the PDX airport for thousands of travelers weekly, Cinetopia, wedding ceremonies, country clubs, business conferences, and retirement communities.
In 2012, Michael was selected to be one of three finalists for "Best Ceremony Musician" in Oregon Bride Magazine, and was featured in Portland Bride & Groom Magazine.
In addition to his own compositions for solo marimba, Michael covers everything from Bach to Radiohead and Ray Charles to George Gershwin, making him a hit with listeners of all ages. His diverse repertoire has allowed him to play at black tie places like The Portland Golf CLub and Vancouver Clinic, and still appeal to young hip clubs like Mississippi Studios and the Secret Society. Michael's last solo marimba record "Melodies for Wooden Children" has recieved rave reviews and been used in documentaries and commercials. He currently works as the composer for Onehundredseconds.com documentaries, working with such clients in New York as clothing designer Babette, Ino Group, New Amsterdam Market, and Intel here in Portland, Oregon. His music has also been used in documentaries for San Francisco companies Heath Ceramics, Bar Agricole, and Concreteworks.
Michael receintly won a Kickstarter Project and will be funded to record his arrangement of the Nuckracker Suite for marimba quartet which will be released in late November 2013. Michael currently fronts his band "Charlie Blue and the Black Market" which has been compared to a "perfect marriage of Tom Waits, The Police, and Harry Connick Jr.". He has also opened for Art Alexakis and Ron Sexsmith, and had his songs covered by local Portland artist like The Ruby Pines. Michael is currently a instructor/arranger for The Portland Youth Rock Orchestra, The Riverdale Marimba Band, and runs his own pivate studio teaching lessons on drum set, guitar/songwriting, and classical percussion.
